The Wreck of the Delaware

Many, many years ago there was a lady called Huria. She woke up and looked out the window. She heard sudden cries from a ship. She got Hemi and Hohepata from the pa. All night the sailors had been struggling to get the boat to safety. The boat was getting closer and closer to the rocks. A brave man called Henry Squirrell wanted to get the boat safe. He tied a rope to his middle. He got slammed against the rocks. The crew pulled him up. They thought he was dead. One of the crew called Skeet could speak Maori. He called out to the people from the pa, “Throw a rope.” The people from the pa threw a rope and got the ship. A crew mate climbed the roe. Soon the guy was tired so Huria got him. That happened all the time. The last one off was Captain Baldwin. He took a last look at Henry and decided he was dead so he climbed the rope and it snapped. Huria jumped into the water and got him.
An hour later the people from the pa saw Henry crying for help. At that moment the boat smashed and Henry was dead.
Huria and Hemi got a gold or silver watch and that is hoe Huria helped the Delaware.

How the Kiwi Lost its Wings

Long, long ago all of the birds were brightly coloured. The kiwi lived up, up in the highest trees. And all the birds sang the whole day long. Then one day a big plague of insects came into the forest.

Tane Mahuta looked at Fantail. She shivered so he asked cuckoo. “Cuckoo, would you come down to the forest floor?” Cuckoo said, “No Tane. I am too busy building a nest.” So he asked Ruru. Ruru said, “No Tane. I love the light so much I can’t leave it.” So he asked Tui. Tui said, “No Tane. I am afraid. I don’t know what enemies I’ll find on the forest floor.” Tane asked Pukeko. Pukeko said, “No, I don’t want my feet to get wet and the other birds admire my colours.” Then Tane asked Kiwi. Kiwi said, “Yes Tane, I will.

“All you other birds need a punishment. Cuckoo, you shall lay your eggs in other birds’ nests. Ruru, you shall go to the most secret parts of the forest. Tui, you’re so afrai you need the mark of a coward. Where is Pukeko, fine Pukeko. Pukeko, you shall live in the swamp.” Tane looked up. He saw a tear fall out of Bellbird’s eye. You will still sing when the sun touches the bush.

So kiwi lived on the forest floor and that was the end of how the kiwi lost his wings.

My Weekend

In the weekend my family went to George's place for the whole day on Saturday. On Sunday we went to Kaiteriteri with our best friends. They had a kayak and a pedal boat. The kids had the pedal -boat and I caught a fish with my Dad.
